HRD tester — frequently asked questions

What is an HRD tester / high rate discharge tester?

An HRD (High Rate Discharge) tester applies a high cranking current to a 12V car battery and measures the voltage drop under that load. If voltage collapses below the threshold, the battery cannot reliably start an engine — regardless of what it reads at rest.

Which load should I select for my vehicle?

Use the load appropriate to the vehicle and battery application. As a practical SAMCO guide: 100A for bikes and light vehicles, 175A for small and mid-size cars, 300A for larger petrol and SUV applications, and 450A for diesel and commercial applications. Battery capacity and the manufacturer’s test specification also matter — follow the battery or vehicle manufacturer’s specification where available.

How long should the load be applied?

Hold the selected load for about 10 seconds and read the LED voltmeter while it is still applied. Allow roughly a minute of cool-down before the next test.

What voltage indicates a weak battery?

For a fully charged 12V lead-acid battery tested for approximately 10 seconds, SAMCO uses the following practical interpretation: below 9.0V means the battery has failed the test — recharge fully, retest, and replace if it repeats; between 9.0V and 9.5V the battery is weak — recharge it fully and retest before deciding. These are not universal thresholds for every battery type or condition; follow the battery manufacturer’s specification where available.

Does it work with AGM and EFB start-stop batteries?

Yes. The BCT-700 works with all common 12V lead-acid types including AGM, EFB and flooded batteries, so start-stop vehicles are covered.

How is an HRD tester different from a conductance tester?

An electronic (conductance) tester injects a small AC signal, measures conductance and infers a CCA figure from a calibration table. An HRD tester draws a real high-rate current and measures the voltage the battery holds under that load. The HRD result is a direct measurement rather than an inferred one.

Can the BCT-700 test a 24V truck or bus battery?

No. The BCT-700 is designed for one 12V battery at a time. A 24V system is two 12V batteries in series. Do not connect the tester across the complete 24V pack. Testing individual 12V batteries should only be done after the series connections have been safely isolated, following the battery or vehicle manufacturer’s procedure.

Can I use it on a lithium-ion or LiFePO4 battery?

No. The BCT-700 is designed only for 12V lead-acid batteries. Do not connect it to lithium-ion or LiFePO4 batteries; their protection systems and electrical characteristics are different.
